Why is April’s full moon called the Pink Moon?

Despite its name, April’s full moon doesn’t actually turn pink.  The name “Pink Moon” comes from the early spring blooms of the “moss pink” wildflower, native to eastern North America.
April’s full moon also has a variety of other names reflecting the changing seasons and natural world:
  • Nature-Based: Breaking Ice Moon, Moon When the Streams Are Again Navigable, Budding Moon of Plants andShrubs, Moon of the Red Grass Appearing.
  • Animal-Based: Moon When the Ducks Come Back, Moon When the Geese Lay Eggs, Frog Moon, Sucker Moon
Interestingly, this full moon holds special significance in different cultures:
  • Pesach or Passover Moon: Marks the beginning of the Jewish holiday of Passover.
  • Hanuman Jayanti: Corresponds with this festival on the Hindu calendar.
