Domestic cattle were originally identified as 3 distinct species: Bos taurus, European “taurine” (including African and Asian breeds); Bos indicus, zebu; and the extinct species Bos primigenius. The auroch is the ancestor of zebu and taurine cattle. Recently, they have been grouped into one species, including the subspecies Bos primigenius taurus, Bos primigenius indicus and Bos primigenius primigenius.

Complicating matters is the ability of cows to mate with closely related species. Crossbreeds and even breeding exist not only between taurine and zebu cattle (such as sanga, Bos taurus africanus), but also between one or both of these groups and other members of the genus Bos-yaks (dzo[ 4]), banteng, and gaur. Hybrids such as beefalo even between taurine cattle and with bison species, some authors initially considered them to be part of the genus Bos. The origins of some hybrids may not be clear – for example, genetic testing of Dwarf Lulu, the only taurine in Nepal, was found to be a cross between taurine, zebu, and yak. However, domestic cattle have not been successfully crossed with distantly related Bovine species such as water buffalo or African buffalo.
