Paleontologists announced the discovery of a large predatory dinosaur that dominated the Isle of Wight 115 million years ago.
Four discrete bones in the animal’s neck, back and tail were found in three separate 2019 discoveries on Shanklin Beach, but have recently been analyzed by experts from the University of Southampton UK.
Based on some unique fossil features such as the presence of large air vents, the team confirmed the specimen belonged to an unknown species of dinosaur-related dinosaurs. T-rex tyrants and modern day birds.

As described in the journal Papers in Paleontology, the new species, named Vectaerovenator inopinatus, lived about 115 million years ago during the Cretaceous period and is estimated to be 4 m long. The airbags act as an extension of the lungs, providing fuel to help the respiratory system work more efficiently and at the same time making the skeleton lighter.
“Very rare dinosaur fossils have been found on Shanklin Beach,” said lead researcher Chris Barker from the University of Southampton. “It is possible that the Vectaerovenato inopinatus lived in the northern region where the fossil skeleton was excavated.”
Until now, scientists know very little about the mammal species in Europe during the Cretaceous period. The new discovery therefore adds valuable information about the diversity of dinosaurs inhabiting this period.
