Ekoluoma must score more goals for Finland to win their fourth medal after winning bronze in 2011, 2019, and 2022. 6) Promotion requires learning. The freshly promoted Germans fight every game, but they haven’t scored yet. They lag in most areas. Melanie Haefliger’s team were outscored 17-0 and outshot 114-10 after losing 6-0 to Finland on Sunday. To start the quarterfinals well, they must regroup and find answers against the Czechs on Tuesday. 7) The faceoff stereotype works. Faceoffs have traditionally favoured North American teams over European ones. The Zug experience has been that. Four Canadians and four Americans are among the top 10 faceoff percentage players. With 11 victories and 12 draws, U.S.’s Alana Devlin leads the parade with 96.1 percent. One exception is Swedish skipper Ebba Hedqvist, third overall at 71.4% (15 wins, 21 draws). Erika Kankkunen of Finland is seventh with 67.8% (19 wins, 28 draws). 8) Forwards can lead ice time. The 2023 IIHF Women’s World Championship in Brampton, Ontario, saw only two forwards in the top 10 average ice time leaders: Japan’s Rui Ukita (fourth, 25: 05) and Haruka Toko (ninth, 23: 50). At the 2024 U18 Women’s Worlds, five forwards make the top 10. Long-shot medal contenders’ coaches, ravenous for offense, love to play their top attackers. This is shown in host Switzerland.
