Margaret recounts that a classmate, Gordon Young, was the first to wear the pre-Aloha shirt (the design is believed to be original before it was developed into today’s Hawaiian shirt) in the 20s. Gordon’s mother was a tailor and made him a shirt from the cotton fabric commonly used for making Yukata (a type of Summer Kimono) as well as other Japanese women’s kimono designs. Margaret said that Gordon’s shirts are often white with eye-catching motifs such as blue and black bamboo, or geometric patterns. She also shared more about the fact that in 1926, Gordon provided a lot of this shirt design to the University of Washington and since then the Aloha shirt has gradually become known to many people.Musa-Shiya Shoten

In June 1935, in the Hawaiian capital of Honolulu, a tailor named Musa-Shiya Shoten published the first advertisement for Hawaiian shirt designs in the newspaper. He is Japanese and his real name is Koichiro Miyamoto. Nearly a year later, Musa-Shiya continued to advertise a shirt selling “Only for Tourists! Aloha shirts are available or made to order.”Dolores Miyamot, Musa-shiya’s wife and colleague, recalls that in the 1930s she herself made shirts for the then-famous actress Shirley Temple. She also talked about another famous actor of the period, John Barrymore (grandfather of actress Drew Barrymore) who went to the couple’s tailor shop to ask for a shirt from Japanese Kabe Crepe fabric – a shirt design that has never been requested by any customer before. The Musa-Shiya couple are also considered the “natural parents” of today’s Hawaiian shirt.
