Standing in the locker room, Norvell began his address by lamenting life’s injustices, the intangible rewards of perseverance, and the team’s lasting impact. “Because, in life, there will be many things that you cannot explain or put your finger on. However, at the end of the day, you will always have a choice,” Norvell began his address by saying. “You get to decide on the details, the method, and the appearance of what you want to accomplish.” He went on to discuss how, although it’s true that working hard doesn’t ensure success, it usually puts people who do it regularly in a better position to succeed. Work hard, but don’t expect to succeed; I warned you that on the first day I arrived. So far, it hasn’t and won’t. However, you will be highly positioned to accomplish it after doing this. As far as I can tell, it’s something that has been present all season long. “We have some truly remarkable men sitting before me,” Norvell remarked. Then Norvell went on to compliment the squad for their work. Everything you did and every choice you made? Simply to confirm, because guess what? When things are going wrong, it’s fairly simple. Meanwhile, you’re in pain. And now you’re furious. Additionally, you seem to be disappointed. Stopping and pulling back is the easy way to accomplish it. Doing that is what everyone else is hoping you do. “But there are literally a handful of people who are actually prepared to fight,” Norvell remarked. Many things would have been ideal for the Florida State Seminoles and their supporters if I had my way. What transpired was the exact opposite of what I had hoped for: a severely undermanned squad being humiliated by what is widely considered to be the top team in the nation from UGA. For those who loathe the Seminoles, 63-3 will always be the worst possible ending to a fantastic season. Could anything else have transpired? The Seminoles couldn’t have controlled some of these factors, but they could have controlled others. 1. Quarterback Jordan Travis never suffers an injury – It’s expected that everyone would wish this were true when the top quarterback wounded himself in a pointless game versus North Alabama. Not even Kirk Herbstreit can be held responsible for this. I was seriously disappointed by this. 2. FSU backup quarterback Tate Rodemaker improves slightly — Rodemaker had a terrible game against Florida, completing just 12 of 25 passes for 134 yards in a humiliating 24-15 victory against a poor Gators squad. When Rodemaker looked better, everyone felt more at ease with FSU’s offensive. As a result of his concussion, the following domino fell in the game. 3. Brock Glenn improved; the true freshman was rushed into action due to Rodemaker’s concussion and appeared to be ineffective, throwing for 55 yards on 8 of 21 attempts in the ACC championship game against Louisville. FSU’s 16-6 victory was ugly because it required them to run the Wildcat on occasion. The FSU offense would have played with a bit more confidence if Glenn had played well, especially though Rodemaker is expected to return for the playoffs. 4. Boo Corrigan, the head of the ACC’s playoff committee, was the one who ultimately left the Seminoles out of the playoffs, not Herbstreit or anybody else you want to blame. The team went perfect in the Power Five and was expected to secure a playoff spot, but the problems with the offense and the backup quarterbacks were used as an excuse to keep them out. 5. Florida State turns down the Orange Bowl invitation—I know, crazy, right? It would have been better if they had declined than to throw the depleted roster to the wolves (or Dawgs), what with all the money and the amount of valuable practice time it would have taken younger guys. 6. FSU assembles as a unit and gives it their all—Without Travis, of course, the full complement of Noles comes together to give Georgia a run for their money and maybe pull off an upset. Their 14-0 victory over the two-time defending champions lends credence to the claim (sorry, UCF). It stinks, too, because none of these things transpired. Instead of committing fully to the Orange Bowl or politely declining, the committee utilized the injury to Travis as an excuse to shaft FSU for the SEC. The result was the worst conceivable outcome, and the score of 63-3 will always be cited as an argument against the Seminoles by those who dislike them.
