Owen Allard wasn’t expected to reach Canada’s National Junior Team, but hard work and determination got him to Gothenburg. Owen Allard’s hockey resume is surprising for a National Junior Team player. Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds forward was a seventh-round pick in the 2020 OHL Priority Selection and has been passed over in consecutive NHL drafts. But the Renfrew, Ontario, native has worked hard to make the Canadian 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship team in Gothenburg, Sweden. “I laid it all on the line,” Allard admits. Allard traveled to France to watch his brother Sutton play in the Ligue Magnus during the COVID-19 epidemic in 2020-21. Never give up, Allard’s motto. He knew he could have quit skating at any point, but he kept going. “I’ve defied all odds and stuck with it,” Allard adds. It would have been easy for me to quit hockey or not play, but never give up and trust your ability. Allard’s chance to exhibit his character and skill on the world stage excites Nishizaki. “His energy is infectious,” Nishizaki says. “You see him on the ice and his work ethic that got him on this team, but it’s his energy, love of hockey, and teammates. He motivates others to improve. Allard’s hard work has paid off as he joins Canada’s National Junior Team, but there’s still more to do. He wants to make the most of this experience in Sweden and see where his hockey career goes. “It’s been rewarding,” Allard says. I feel good about all the hard work and sacrifice my family has made for me, and I think [Hockey Canada] noticed something in my game they needed in this tournament.
